My Best Parenting Advice:”Do You Know What A Nanny Is?…I’m Scared by Baby Jake
Hi, it’s me baby Jake. You know, I’m the cool baby on this site that tells you what it’s like to be newborn. But not sure I’m still a newborn cause I’m three months old now. How are you? Mommy and I finally got over our colds and it feels good to taste my food again. And it’s nice to see mommy’s nose back to the regular color instead of red and chapped. And she’s happy again. When my mommy is happy, I’m happy too!
But I’m a little confused about something…she had this strange lady come to the house the other day. I was in my swing and she thought I was sleeping but I was just pretending because I wanted to hear what they were saying and find out who this lady was. She didn’t look like a grandma even though I heard mommy saying the word, nanny. Is a nanny a grandma? Anyway, this lady’s hair was different and her tummy was much bigger than my grandma’s. I think she might be having a baby. But back to the story…
I heard mommy say something about leave and being over. And when she said it she looked really sad. I think this leave thing might be bad. Do you know what it means?
Then I heard her ask this lady lots of questions:
- How many babies have you taken care of?
- Do you have CPR and First-aid certification?
- Do you have any medical conditions we need to know about?
- Do you have any allergies?
- Why do you want to be a nanny?
- Will you get on the floor and play with Jake?
- What would you do if you couldn’t get Jake to stop crying?
- What would you do if Jake didn’t want to take his bottle?
- Can you please give us three personal references that are not family?
- Can I call your references from past jobs?
- Do you have any questions?
Mommy and the nanny lady talked about a lot more, but I can’t remember the rest. But we have this great book with an entire checklist called “Help! My Baby Came Without Instructions” by Blythe Lipman that could really help.
Then she showed this lady my nursery, diapers, wipes, clothes, food, bottles and toys. The lady was smiling and shaking her head. I think she might be a nice lady until I heard her say, “ I can come and do a working interview and take care of Jake on Monday.” Hmm? …. A working interview. Where’s mommy going? I’m starting to worry.
And guess what happened next? The lady came over and took me out of my swing. I was scared and started crying because she felt different than mommy and daddy and was holding me really tight on her shoulder. And she kept saying “Shh” really loud in my ears. I think this lady has to go and mommy needs to rescue me.
But then I started thinking; maybe I’ll stop crying and see what she does. So I did. And then mommy looked happy again and the lady held me a little looser. She put me on her lap so I could see her and started singing Old McDonald and tickling me. I couldn’t help laughing out loud because it really tickled. And she was singing softly…. no more loud shushing.
Then mommy asked the lady to change my diaper, “oh boy,” was that a mistake. I peed on her arm when she took the diaper off. I couldn’t help it, it just happened. Guess she doesn’t know about diaper changing. This lady might not cut it. But at least she laughed.
Then mommy asked her to give me a bottle. I was really starving so it was okay even though it felt different then when mommy or daddy fed me. It took me a long time to burp. I finally burped really loud when she stood up, but you won’t believer this… I spit up all over her shirt! Didn’t anyone tell her sometimes babies spit up?
I think it’s time for this nanny lady to leave because I’m getting really tired. I was so happy when she put me in my crib. She patted my back a little and that was nice. Sometimes it’s really exhausting to be a baby. There are so many new things to figure out.
Just as my eyes were closing, I heard mommy thank her and say, “See you on Monday for the working interview.” Whatever this interview is, I sure hope mommy will be here too because I’m not sure this lady really knows what to do with babies and that can’t be a good thing!
I will let you know what happened. Bet you can’t wait!
Hugs,
Baby Jake
